Soul Street Waste Management
Soul street is dedicated to responsibly managing the waste generated over New Years Eve. We will have designated bin stations set up for disposal of recyclables (bottles and cans), compostables and landfill. We will also be partnering with Mullum Cares to install a wash station for reusables and have bin fairies to assist with where waste goes. We will also be working with stall holders to make sure they are using the best possible materials that we can recover or recycle.
It requires all of us to take care of the local environment, so we encourage people to bring their own reusable items, sort waste appropriately, reading signage or asking staff and volunteers.
Zero Single-use Cups: Bring your own or rent
It’s 2022 and BYO is the ‘new normal’!
This New Years Eve you can kick start a new year’s resolution to reduce waste and help protect the environment by avoiding single-use takeaway packaging. Single-use takeaway is a major waste issue, creating contamination, litter, methane just more waste in general. Single-use packaging items use the earth’s resources for the simple sake of “convenience”. But there is a solution….reuse. When we refuse single-use packaging, we save resources like land and water, minimise emissions, reduce litter, reduce waste to landfill and endorse a positive change for the future. Choosing to bring your own or reuse is an easy swap to make with a big impact.
Soul street this year will have a wash station set up in Denning Park, operated by Mullum Cares and supported by Council. You can take up the option of hiring a cup that can be washed, sanitised and reused. There will also be friendly bin fairies that will guide you where to put your waste should you have any.
If there are reusables available at the event, can I still bring my own cup?
Yes, we encourage people to BYO their own cups, plates and cutlery. Make sure they are clean so that you receive the best quality beverage.
What is wrong with compostable/biodegradable packaging?
Firstly compostable and biodegradable are different. If an item is truly compostable, it is made from natural materials and can break down in the right conditions. Biodegradable items are not necessarily made of 100% natural materials and can sometimes have plastic in them. They are made with an additive to help them break down without oxygen.
It isn’t always clear if items are compostable, there are no rules around labelling. They can impact the quality of the compost depending on what they are made of. Compostable items require using natural resources, land and transport and they are only used for a short period of time. The environmental footprint of single-use compostable is often still larger than reusable.
Why do coffee cups all go to landfill?
There are too many types of coffee cups, which creates a lot of contamination. They cannot be recycled, because they are made of paper and have a lining of plastic, bioplastic, PLA.
Are reusables safe?
There is nothing more or less safe about reusables. It’s all about having the systems in place like with a café or restaurant. In many cases reusables can be more safe because they require less handling. They are freshly sterilised when they go to the vendors. Retail food service is highly regulated and reusable systems must meet strict safety and hygiene requirements
Some people are reluctant to embrace reusables because they may not be used to them, but there was a time when drinking hot beverages out of sippy cups was new. Once we understand and utilise reuse systems that make more and more sense.
Why is there a bond for cups?
In order to encourage people to return cups and take care of them, there is a bond. This also helps to cover the cost of the items. In a controlled environment, like a club, cups can be collected. But at an outdoor event we need to make sure the cups come back for reuse. We hope to see a future where reuse is the only option and there will be less likely to be a cost.
